Miyagi is a Japanese prefecture north of Tokyo on the east coast of Honshu island. It has a Pacific coastline, western mountains and several natural parks. Matsushima city is set on a bay with 250 rocky islands topped with pine trees, the Zuigan-ji Zen temple has an art museum, and the Zao Fox village is most popular with tourists. In Miyagi’s capital, Sendai, are the remains of 17th-century Sendai Castle, built for samurai lord Date Masamune.
Zuigan-ji Zen Temple is surrounded by shallow caves and a grove of towering cedar trees. The current temple buildings date from 1609 when the founder of Sendai, Masamune Date, ordered Zuigan-ji built as his family temple. Befitting his ambition and sense of beauty, Masamune brought in wood and master craftsmen from the Kyoto area to erect a temple with architectural features common to castles of the time.
Zao Fox Village is located in the heart of Miyagi, and is one of the best places in Japan to go and see foxes. The foxes freely roam a preserve which visitors can enter. Foxes are popular creatures in Japanese folktales and lore, with much to learn about the history and culture behind them.
Samurai lord Date Masamune, heir to a long line of powerful daimyō in the Tōhoku region, he went on to found the modern-day city of Sendai. An outstanding tactician, he was made all the more iconic for his missing eye, as Masamune was often called dokuganryū (独眼竜), or the "One-Eyed Dragon of Ōshū"
